"Bankoku danjo jinbutsu zue" by UTAGAWA Yoshiiku

For the exhibition

After the visit of Kuro-fune (Black Ships) to the isolated Japan, a lot of colored prints called "Yokohama Ukiyoe" were published. They were very popular among Japanese people because they depicted the foreigners and their customs, quite rarities in those days.

On the other hand, the travelers from overseas must have eyed Japanese culture with much curiosity. We will show you the culture interchange right after the opening of the modern Japan, by means of the various matereials of Waseda University Library.
