Collection

In commemoration of its 125th anniversary, Waseda University sets up a new memorial collection in the central library, honoring Tsunoda Ryusaku, a graduate of Tokyo Senmon Gakko, the predecessor of Waseda University, for his achievements in Japanese studies and introduction of Japanese culture to the United States. The collection derives from Tsunoda's private library, and Ms. Kai Miwa, who worked at the East Asian Library of Columbia University, kindly and enduringly sent us the books for 40 years after the donation was decided. Ms. Hoshino Fujiko, Tsunoda's daughter also donated Tsunoda's books to the collection.
It mainly includes foreign books on Japanese and American culture, whose subjects are various such as bibliography, religion, history, biography, geography, arts, literature and language.
Hopefully this collection will acquaint you with Tsunoda's pioneering contribution to the Japanese studies at Columbia and also with his great spirit.
