Professing to be impartial, independent, and self-respecting, the Jiji shinpo [lit., “Current-affairs News”] was a leading newspaper in the Meiji and Taisho eras. After the death of its founder, Fukuzawa Yukichi, in 1901, its financial situation deteriorated. It ceased publication in 1936 and was absorbed into the Tokyo nichinichi shinbun. After World War II, it was revived in 1946, but proved out of touch with the times and merged with the Sankei shinbun in 1955.
