The 1860 entry in the Buko nenpyo says, "Starting in late July, a leopard has been exhibited at the west side of Ryogoku Bridge. It attracts many spectators. A Dutchman is said to have brought it over. The leopard is probably more than four feet tall. . . . It is fed with raw chicken and dog meat."
