The text introduces "sacred" medicines for curing syphilis and gonorrhea, claiming they were invented by "Western chemist Mr. Hedriodus," probably the potbellied man in the picture. The illustration is the work of Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847?1915), a painter skilled in caricature. The portrayal of the high-ranking oiran courtesan was "modeled after the style of Toyokuni II," says the inscription at bottom left.
