The first dentist started practice in Japan in the 4th year of Meiji (1872) when Dr. Alexandre, a physician for the French legation opened a dental clinic in Ginza, Tokyo. The first Japanese to practice dentistry was Kobata Einosuke of the former Nakatsu domain (now Oita prefecture). The use of kanji characters to express the term "rubber base" evokes the Meiji era. Today katakana is generally used.
