The shop name, Yotsumeya (lit., Four-Eyed Shop), comes from the fact that the shop used the family crest of "four squares with eyes" (yotsume-yui). Later, this shop's name became the generic term for implements for sexual arousal and aphrodisiacs. The names of preparations sold at this shop, such as Chomei-gan ("long life pills"), were likely to crop up in droll senryu poems.
