In Japan, its effects were promoted for the first time by mid-Edo-period physician Goto Konzan (1659?1733), and bear gall was treasured for its medicinal properties. Medicines produced using bear gall were known as cures for digestive ailments and as a tonic for small children. It is famous for its bitter taste.
