明治10年3月 ; 請求記号:文庫10 8328 ; 3枚続 ; 37×73cm ; 日本史上最後の大規模な内戦である西南戦争は、田原坂の戦いにおいて天王山を迎えた。右、「新政大総督」の旗のもと、坂上に陣取るは桐野利秋率いる西郷軍、左、旭日旗の一隊は谷干城の指揮する政府軍である。激戦の末、装備に優る官軍が辛くも勝利を得た。 ; March 1877 ; triptych ; The battle at Tabaruzaka Hill in what is now northern Kumamoto prefecture was the turning point of the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, the last major civil conflict in Japanese history. At the right of the picture is Saigo Takamori's rebel army led by Kirino Toshiaki taking up its position on the hilltop under a banner that reads "Great Governor-general of the New Government," and at the left are the troops of the new Meiji government, led by Tani Kanjo, upholding rising-sun flags. After intense fighting, the better-equipped government army won by a narrow margin.
