He performed his official duties with distinction during his stay in Hakodate (then the administrative center of Hokkaido) and was summoned back to Edo. He devoted himself, along with Oguri Tadamasa and other important officials, to coping with the crisis of the shogunate in its final years. It was while he was away in France, however, that the shogunate collapsed. After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, he became a well-known journalist writing forYubin hochi shinbun.
