In 1888, after resigning his post as editor-in-chief at the Official Gazette Bureau, he launched Nihon with the assistance of former minister of agriculture and commerce Tani Kanjo and others. His editorials urging national unity and genuine independence from external powers was articulate and eloquent, and was received favorably by readers.
