Mogusa, or moxa, a substance produced by pounding the dried leaves of yomogi (mugwort) in a mortar, is used for traditional medical treatment. Since ancient times the place best known for production of moxa was Omi province (now Shiga prefecture). Moxa dealers from there founded shops in Edo (now Tokyo), and among them Kamaya was the oldest. Several shops called themselves Kamaya, and they always quarreled as to whose shop was the original.
