This print, entitled "Honnoji Incident" (1582; in which the hegemon Oda Nobunaga was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide, one of his principal generals), actually depicts the 1868 battle at Kan’eiji Temple in Ueno, Edo, in which troops of the newly formed Meiji government destroyed a military unit of former retainers of the defunct shogun organized to resist the restoration of Imperial rule. It emphasizes the overwhelming firepower of the government forces.
