So that is just one example. Another one would be Yoshikawa Kojiro, authority on Chinese literature, so you recognize the name? He inscribed this on occasion when he visited here and interestingly, by the time he visited here, the Japanese sources had already been published, Source of Japanese Tradition. And he was quite struck by that. He said we do not have anything like this in Japanese of that length and breadth. I believe when he went back to Japan this was the germ or the basis of the idea of having a series called Nihon no Shiso, as a very, very prominent source anthology, source readings. Which he did with other scholars as you may know.
So by that simple exposure on Tsunoda's part, that I was introduced to a great many Japanese scholars, who in some ways could give a better account of the development of these traditions in East Asia as a whole, than you could get from any Chinese scholar of the time. The best known Chinese authority on Chinese philosophy was Fung Yu-lang, but he had studied here with John Dewey and he was writing a book about Chinese philosophy intended for a reader like John Dewey or the students of John Dewey. And he was also limited by the circumstances of Chinese education in the teens and the 20s. Some of you are familiar with the so-called "May 4th Movement." It was a rebellion against Confucianism. Most of it was very critical, and not based on very much information, because after 1905 the Chinese educational system went over on the Western pattern. You no longer studied the Chinese classics. Now, unfortunately, that is true of much of education in East Asia today. Most of it is based on the Western model: specialized, departmentalized, hardly anyone speaks to the larger issues of civilization or tradition that have been spoken to over the centuries. Most people are specialists in something or other. Very, very few would be willing - let us say - to teach The Man'y_sh_ or The Tale of Genji the way Tsunoda sensei did, you see. They are specialists on one or another modern author. That is typical of the situation in China, also.
