エミー・V・ハインリック（コロンビア大学東アジア図書館館長）：Once again, please forgive me for speaking in English. It is so much easier for me.
Our conversation this afternoon began to touch on some very difficult subjects: the relationship between our two countries at war, the internment of American Japanese citizens, the arrest of erai sensei on suspicion of spying, and it makes me think of two things. One is that the relationship between Columbia University and Waseda University, especially through their libraries, is of continuing and extreme importance. And the second thing is that this is because a bridge has its two parts in two different places. That is the nature of a bridge: it goes from one place to another.
Just before I came to Japan this time, I was in California, at Berkeley, for a conference on libraries. But while I was there I crossed the Bay Bridge several times, and the Bay Bridge had been destroyed, partially, in an earthquake. It reminds me, and I want to remind you, that bridges are subject to all sorts of disasters: natural disasters such as earthquakes, manmade disasters such as wars. What we have to learn from this, I believe, is that bridges require maintenance: constant, ongoing maintenance. I believe a conference such as this is part of the maintenance of the bridges that have been built by people like Tsunoda sensei over the past hundred or so years, and that we will continue, I hope, to be part of the team that maintains the bridge.
